Last night's tip was the Mysteries of Unsharp Mask. It seems that most folks know they *should* use Unsharp Mask, but few really no why. This tip goes into detail about the rather alien parameters that the Unsharp Mask dialog box accesses (radius and threshold), and provides some basic guidelines on settings for both portraits and inanimate objects.

I grabbed the new Gorillaz single from the iTunes Music Store which comes with 4 videos (mpeg-4 encoded). How cool, I thought...videos with my download.

When I connected my iPod to Powerbook to transfer the files, I got a strange warning. Now, that's not such a big deal but the phrasing of the warning is weird.



Does this mean it's just *my* iPod that can't play them...and there is another version in the works that does?

Auto install is on by default in Tiger's version of Safari. You can turn it off in preferences. Otherwise...

Go to a website that offers a widget... it gets downloaded to your Dashboard...
So now you have an internet connected little webscreen living in Dashboard...
Ads, Pron, Recipes, good stuff and bad , and maybe the YML stream too (... Jay?)

Maybe Apple will put a 'Disable Dashboard Auto-Install' checkbox right under the 'Block Pop-Up Windows' one in the Safari menu.

Don't like Spotlight being in your menu bar (especially for users of Launchbar), why not turn it off?

I've been following, like a lot of you, the story of Apple removing books, published by Wiley, from the Apple Retails stores.

CNET seems to have more information. Even though the the Amazon description claims the book is "Based on hundreds of highly unauthorized interviews with Jobs' nearest and dearest", CNET reports the book was "Written without access to Jobs or people close to him" and "the book has little new information and will disappoint readers hungry for fresh insights into Jobs."

CNET goes on to say, "Yet what the authors lack in firsthand sources they compensate for with attitude. One chapter in the uncorrected proof is titled "iPod, iTune, Therefore I Con."

Confirming recent speculation from Mac rumor sites, Amazon.com has added a new dual 2.7GHz Power Mac G5 model. The online retailer lists the new Power Mac under model number M9749LL/A with the following specifications: Mac OS X10.4, code named Tiger, Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 processors, 512MB of DDR SDRAM, 250GB hard drive, and 16x Dual Layer SuperDrive (CD/DVD+RW). Amazon is selling the machine for US$2,994.99. It can apparently be pre-ordered now.
