New Apple Ads
Apple is showing a really entertaining series of Mac vs PC adds on their web site. I can't wait to see what coverage they are planning with these. They are short, very amusing, and fairly too the point in their comparison (albiet over simplified).

BackityMac - One click backup for the Mac
Did you ever just want to backup your email database, what about the iPhoto library, or iTunes or just the Safari bookmarks? What if you did want a full home folder backup? What if you wanted all these with just one click of a checkbox and one click of a backup button? Well this application is for you! It’s called BackityMac and it’s available for download free as donation-ware at www.whimsplucky.com. Now it’s in the process of development, so it does not backup to a CD or DVD and it just creates a simple image file, but it’s a simple to use and fast backup solution for those of you that do not like to back up until it’s too late. As a bonus, the program comes with some maintenance features built in. But what is backup without restore. Choose an image created by this program, and the backed up contents will automatically be detected for you, Then decided what you want to restore, and click “Restore”. The contents will be placed back into their original directory automatically replacing it’s contents. This is the perfect solution for those who want to be able to clone their home directory and replace it on another Mac untouched.Did you ever just want to backup your email database, what about the iPhoto library, or iTunes or just the Safari bookmarks? Perfect for Backup Day!!!!
April 1st?
So, if April 1st is supposed to be the 30th Anniversary, how come the Apple Form 10-K I got in the mail today states, "Apple Computer, Inc. ("Apple" or the "Company") was incorporated under the laws of the State of California on January 3, 1977."
Maybe April 1, 1976 was when their application for incorporation was SUBMITTED? Just curious. Jim Foster Hampton, Ontario, Canada
Lesa Reviews Elements 4 for Macworld
"With an eye toward its core audience of non-professional photo enthusiasts, Adobe has made improvements to its 4th version of Photoshop Elements that make it easier than ever to edit, organize, and share digital photos. Despite its consumer-level price tag, Photoshop Elements 4.0 sports some new tools that gurus wish the full-blown Photoshop had." (Be sure to check out the comments at the end of the story :) ) Lesa Reviews Elements 4 for Macworld
MacBook Pro
When I initially got my MacBook Pro 2.0 ghz I used the migration assistant to transfer my data automatically to the new computer. It was dreadfully slow with the 1 gig of Ram when trying to use Adobe CS2 and even the universal apts. did not run as well as I had expected. I installed another gig of RAM (machine now maxed at 2 gig of RAM) and the machine was much better, but still not what I was hoping for. So i wiped the disc and then manually transfered the data and preferences that I knew I needed. I then did a clean install of Adobe CS 2 and other must have applications.
The Rosetta applications are running as fast or even a little faster than on my previous machine (G4 1.5 with 2 gig of RAM) and the Universal applications just fly. In summary if you are thinking of getting a MacBook Pro I reccommend maxing out the RAM and doing a clean install. Stay a way from the migration assistant.
Leap-A Malware: What You Need to Know
The worst thing you can do whenever a virus scare hits is to panic. The second worst thing you can do is not keep yourself informed. That said, it pays to keep on top of potentially harmful things like Leap-A. After a day of research and testing the malware for ourselves, here’s what you need to know about Leap-A. (Here is an AppleScript that will change the permissions on the user InputManagers folder to root only. This should prevent Leap-A (a.k.a. "Oompa Loompa") malware and its derivatives from installing) Leap-A Malware: What You Need to Know
New MacOS X Trojan/Virus Alert
A file called "latestpics.tgz" was posted on a Mac rumors web site http://www.macrumors.com/ , claiming to be pictures of "MacOS X Leopard" (an upcoming version of MacOS X, aka "MacOS X 10.5"). It is actually a Trojan (or arguably, a very non-virulent virus). We'll call it "Oompa-Loompa" (aka "OSX/Oomp-A") for reasons that will become obvious. You cannot be infected by this unless you do all of the following:
...and then for most users, you must also enter your Admin password. You cannot simply "catch" the virus. Even if someone does send you the "latestpics.tgz" file, you cannot be infected unless you unarchive the file, and then open it. New MacOS X Trojan/virus Alert |
