The New GodPod

Marantz, as a company, has been around for a lot of years making a lot of quality audio gear. Their name has dropped off the radar recently for consumer products but they are still very popular among audiophiles.

In the past, Your Mac Life has recorded audio for the show and podcasts through a Sony MiniDisc recorder. While compact, the MiniDisc had a lot of trade-offs, including not recording digitally and recording over previous tracks if you weren't careful.

We switched to recording directly on to our Powerbooks using a Griffin Technology iMic, a Griffin Technology Microphone Cable, and Sound Studio from FeltTip Software. While not the most elegant of solutions, it did the job.

While planning for our trip to Paris for the Apple Expo, we discussed how we could better manage the process of "recording in the field". I asked a few friends and our Your Mac Life Mailing List and several people pointed to the Marantz line of Digital Recorders.

Just looking at the raw spec sheet of the units made them sound perfect. Battery (or AC Adaptor) powered, can record Mono or Stereo files in either WAV or MP3 formats, compatible with most types of microphones, USB interface, compatible with both PCs and Macs and records to Compact Flash cards.

We contacted the folks at Marantz and asked them to send us one of their three possible units. They sent us the PMD660; which while lowest on the food chain, is more than enough recorder for the vast majority of people.

That's it and then you're in! The next time you login in to http://www.poolhost.com, you can go to 'My Pools' and you'll see all pools that you are a member of.

Clicking on a pool name will take you to that pool. You can switch to a different pool by going to 'My Pools' again at any time.
