I am weak and I have no willpower.

While walking around the Plaza Art Fair in Kansas City, MO with John, his son Alex and his roommate Jenny, well we just had to visit the Apple Store on the Plaza. I made a quick sweep of the store, held and listened to the Nano's on display, pretended not to care and looked around the rest of the store...but the Nano was speaking to me. I kid you not. Next time you visit an Apple Store, you too will hear the call of the Nano.

However, I would not let it break me (for all of about 5 minutes). I walked to the front of the store trying to justify this unneeded but much lusted for little piece of hardware. I looked at John..."well I could get the the 2 Gig model..that wouldn't be as much"...he just shrugged said he wasn't commenting either way (thanks, John...like I have any willpower).

"It'll be like a little birthday prezzie to myself..." - John continued to shrug...remaining neutral, like Switzerland. Infuriating.

Whoosh...5 minutes later, we all were walking out of the store...me with my little Nano bag.

Once again, damn you Apple! Resistance is futile.

Yes, Kenny and I, (with a special thanks to the gas prices) have avoided the 30 mi. trip to the Apple Store in Syracuse (Nano avoidance....for now anyway). Can't hold out forever, esp. with Christmas on the horizon.

Right now I'm trying to stay focused on purchasing a new 12" iBook. The low end version just to kick around on the web with while hanging out on the sofa. (Beats fighting over who's using the desktop iMac.) Between Kenny surfing e-bay and playing sollitare and Ryan surfing Pokemon cards I can't get to my own computer anymore!

Enjoy your Nano Sly! It's your post-B-day present to yourself. That is allowed the last time I read the little known "Birthday Rule Book."

I'm soooo lucky. They are hard to get in Europe right now so I don't have to worry about it. Maybe they will come up with a 12-step programs for Avoidance Purchase before I can give in...

Which is better, bearing in mind I am running in Bangkok and it is going to get all wet through being sweated on? Not sure if any of the Thai Apple stores have it yet either (and we have to pay a premium price too).
cheers

Let us know what you think of it, Sly. I've been resisting the iPods, but the Shuffle started to pull at me. I think that the nano is probably the one that is going to work for me. I'll hold off and see if the prices come down before/after Christmas. Last Architectural Registration Exam is the beginning of November, so that sounds like a good excuse for a present...

By the way, one of the advantages to growing older is the rule of proportion. You have a longer life to celebrate, so you get to celebrate "birthday week" if you so choose. This can be the full week your birthday lands in or within seven days either way of your birthday!

Yeah, he's pretty useless, isn't he?

Either would be fine. Get a good case and you'll be set!

12 steps will take too long to fight off the power of the Nano.

IMO, if you're only gonna use it for jogging, then probably the Shuffle is the better choice for you...I mean when you're jogging you're not really gonna need to look at a screen to select your fave songs, you just want music. However, if you're gonna use it elsewhere, during your commute to work, while traveling, etc., the extra couple of gigs that the Nano offers, plus the screen and other features makes it the better choice. And the colour screen is gorgeous on the nano.

As for getting it all sweaty while you run, there are armband holders for the nano as well as lanyard earphones so one of those might be the better choice for you rather than holding it while you run. I can't imagine running with the iPod around your neck with the lanyard, so the armband is probably your best bet. (Well, I can't imagine running either, but that's another matter.)

Obviously, it all depends on which one fits better for you and your needs. I don't think you'll go wrong getting either one, but if it were me, I'd spend the extra money and get the Nano.

Yep, just a 2 gig one.

But fair warning to those getting the black nano, it marks/scratches easily so be prepared for your beautiful black nano not to remain pristinely clear for too long. Mine's already marked up. Definitely need to find a decent case for it for when I put it in my bag/purse.

I was also trying to hold off. I even saw one from a distance and walked (slumped) away. Until my 20G iPod hard drive died (won't mention on how it has survived for two years after a fall on it hard enough to warp the aluminum backing and crease the cover).
So now I am waiting for my black Nano to arrive (1-2 weeks to Canada). Could have gone back to the store but the engraving was too good pass up.
My listening is backing up and my anxiety levels are climbing as I wait...

just bought a 60G iPod and could not justify it-so bought black nano, offered it for raffle at school in connection with cupcake sale and in one day managed to raise $640 to add to our school's Katrina relief funds. Got the pleasure of buying and of the excitement it generated and of donating to a good cause! Thanks Steve-we could never have sold kindergarten decorated cupcakes for $4 each without the incentive.

The little black beauty arrived, the day they announced the new video iPods - no regrets at all.

So I promptly walked around showing it off, listening to 3 weeks worth of Your Mac Life, Trash Talk, some other magazines and podcasts (OK, so I am still trying to catch up - talk about information buffer overflow).

By the way, the black ones do indeed get light scratches very easily, just as reported. It is definitely worse than my 3rd generation iPod was. Just my pawing it has caused it to get light scratches (only visible if the light hits it right). No keys, coins; the worse thing was my finger nail trying to remove something that got onto the screen (don't try that), and a clean shirt pocket. This weekend, heading to the Apple store for a case (can't wait for one to get shipped up here at that rate). Will also watch to see if the buffer material for the iPod works with this one too.

It is a thing of beauty (as I sigh contently, slowly recovering from being without an iPod for three weeks).

Just curious if those that are NaNo using YML'ers AND also have the Lanyard, what they think of the lanyard/headphone i.e. sound, comfort, etc.

Thanks for any feedback.

Lesa has had hers for a while and Sly picked up a pair at the Apple Store in Atlanta. Let's see if they are paying attention and will give us any feedback.

I've had the lanyard headphones for quite some time and I really, really like them. They're perfect for air travel... you can just put the iPod around your neck and go. Also, the biggest benefit is that the lanyard headphones almost never seem to get all tangled up and twisted like the regular headphones do.
